I. COURSE DESCRIPTION

Nursing 303 is a course which focuses on strategies for providing culturally competent nursing care to a multi-cultural society. Theoretical models and assessment tools are used to examine the diversity of cultural beliefs, values and practices that impact the health of individuals and groups. Placement: either semester junior year in traditional program; after meeting prerequisites in ADP program.



II. TERMINAL OBJECTIVES

At the successful completion of this course, students will have:

  1. Analyzed selected theoretical frameworks of transcultural nursing models

  2.  
  3. Utilized a theoretical framework to perform a cultural assessment

  4.  
  5. Examined the interrelatedness of the components of culture and health.

  6.  
  7. Examined how culture influences the health of individuals, families & communities

  8.  
  9. Examined traditional views of health and illness of selected cultures.

  10.  
  11. Identified strategies used to provide culturally competent care

  12.  
  13. Analyzed their use of culturally competent nursing strategies in a professional nursing encounter.

III. TEACHING-LEARNING STRATEGIES

This course will be delivered using technology enhanced learning as much as possible. Teaching- learning strategies will include:

IV. CONCEPTS

The seven concepts upon which the curriculum are based permeate this course. The overriding concept, health, is implicit in all that is taught and learned in this course. The three process concepts, critical thinking, caring, and communication are a component of many of the content topic areas for this course. The remaining frame of reference concepts, systems, transition, and culture are particularly seen in the course content as identified here.

V. FACULTY EXPECTATIONS OF STUDENTS
  1. When a student is found responsible for cheating, plagiarism, and/or falsification in this course, the student will earn a course grade of F and a report will be sent to the School of Nursing, Academic Affairs Committee for consideration of sanctions.
    1. Such acts include but are not limited to:
    2. Copying answers from other students' answer sheets.
    3. Using the work of other students as his/her own.
    4. Taking and passing off as one's own ideas, writings, etc. of another person without appropriate documentation.
    5. Giving false clinical information either verbally or in writing.
    6. Placing an individual's health and well-being at risk.

VI. ASSIGNMENTS
  1. Complete 4 journal entries.
  2. Facilitate and participate in seminars.
  3. Write a paper which reflects your understanding and use of one cultural assessment model with a client(s)/family from a culture different from your own.

VII. EVALUATION

The following scale will be used to determine the final grade for the course:

A = 94-100 C+ = 82-83
A- = 92-93 C = 76-81
B+ = 90-91 D = 70-75
B = 86-89 F = <70
B- = 84-85
