Upcoming
Events
There will be no G.R.O.W.S. on February 27th due to
Capital’s “spring break”. Why on
Earth we have spring break now I don’t know but maybe someone can look into
that next year. :-)
On March 6th the girls will be presenting their final
projects to everyone. We will have
a sharing session to celebrate the end of the program. It will be a night of joy and sadness
for us all.
On a lighter note, we are planning a field trip for the girls for
sometime in March or April. Right now,
we are looking into visiting Perkins
Observatory in Delaware, Ohio.
Several of the mentors and I will be going there soon to check it out
and to see if it will be a worthwhile experience for the girls. We’ll keep you posted.
The mentors got together to get to know each other and the
program. We discussed what we wanted
to do this year and had a little bit of fun. We decided that our orientation session’s theme would be
bubbles.

The mentors met again to explore the bubble so we could prepare
stations for next week. After
about 20 minutes of what looked like playing but what sounded like science, we
choose our stations and prepared for next week.
The mentors and the girls met for the first time tonight. The girls explored the properties of bubbles
through stations where they were trying to figure out the answers to very
complicate questions about bubbles that seem to be so simple. It was a great time. To see pictures click

The girls and their mentors paired up and started to think about
what they wanted to explore. They
asked questions about the world around them that amazed us all. We spent a lot of time talking one on
one about what interested them about science and what they might want to
explore. These girls are SO smart
it is amazing.
The girls got to work with Dr. Andrea Karkowski from the psychology
department exploring creativity.
The girls got to talk about what they thought creativity is and if and
how it can be measured. Then they
got to show off some of their creative minds. They also got to stretch their minds to answer this
question. See if you can figure it
out: The maker doesn’t want it, the
buyer doesn’t use it, and the user doesn’t see it. What is it? Give up? Click here for the answer. After this, the girls went to the
library with their mentors to find information on their topics to get a better
idea of what they are going to do.
The girls spent this time setting up their experiments and
beginning their research. They
spent a lot of time in the library and on the Internet looking for
resources. They formed a basic
plan for their experiments and got ready to do them. Unfortunately, because of Capital’s schedule, we didn’t meet
at all in December and we lost a lot of time.
After being off for more than a month, we were excited to get back
to the program. The girls met with
their mentors, exchanged stories from their holiday, and started back to
work. It will be time to
experiment soon.
Since we had missed so much time together, the mentors and I
decided to have an overnight at Capital with the girls. We wanted the girls to experience
college in a safe way and so we arranged for a sleepover. We did a scavenger hunt, ate a lot of
pizza, played games (including about 2 hours of Sardines), listened to music,
watched movies, and got a little sleep.
We had a great time and it was the perfect way to kick off the new year.
The girls have spent a lot of time experimenting. They worked on their trials and then
prepared their arties and presentation boards. Just thinking about all the work they have been doing makes
me tired.
