Because the ability to read and write well is recognized as the mark of an educated person, the English department offers a wide variety of introductory and advanced writing courses.  The study of literature and language is an investment in personal growth and an important part of a liberal arts education. The department offers two majors--literature and professional writing--as well as minors in journalism, literature and creative writing.  Students may choose to have dual majors or minors in combination with other disciplines.  Education courses may also be combined with an English major, preparing students for secondary school licensure in integrated language arts.
